The book of I Samuel gives us portraits of three leaders: Samuel, Saul, and David. Two of those portraits are flattering; the other, quite the opposite. Paradoxically, the two men who lead well exhibited some of their best leadership when they were not in charge. Sadly, the man who actually wore the crown took almost every opportunity he had to lead effectively and squandered it.
