Being Ourselves

We are frequently encouraged, “Just be yourself,” and generally speaking, that is good advice. At the same time, Jesus Christ tells us, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Mark 8:34), and His apostle Paul has written in more than one place that we should put away the “old man” (Romans 6:6; Ephesians 4:22; Colossians 3:9). Is it possible for us to be ourselves and also be God wants us to be?
